We strongly recommend wearing proper hiking boots that cover your ankles. The terrain in the High Tatras is often rocky and uneven, so sturdy boots with good ankle support are essential.
You should pack for variable mountain conditions. Pack for variable mountain conditions. Key items include: sturdy hiking boots, moisture-wicking layers (t-shirts, fleece, jacket), a waterproof/windproof rain jacket, and comfortable hiking trousers. Always carry a rain jacket or poncho in your daypack – weather in the High Tatras is very unpredictable, and sudden showers or temperature changes can occur even on a clear day. Other essentials are a medium-sized backpack, water bottle, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), and any personal medications. Trekking poles can be helpful on steep or uneven sections (optional). Don’t worry if you forget something – there are shops in town, and we’ll send you a full detailed kit list about two months before departure as part of your itinerary package.
Yes, travel insurance is absolutely essential and highly recommended. Your policy should cover hiking activities, medical expenses, and mountain rescue. We provide a recommended travel insurance option for you here.
This depends on the type of walking holiday you choose. We offer Easy to Moderate, Moderate, and Moderate to Hard itineraries. For the easier trips, you should be in reasonably good shape: expect hikes of up to around 4-6 hours a day (with plenty of breaks and a longer stop for lunch). For the more challenging itineraries, a higher fitness level is needed. Our hardest hikes can involve 8–9 hours of walking in a day, with steep ascents up to around 1,200 m elevation gain and boulder terrain all the way. You’ll need to be sure-footed and comfortable with heights on those routes. In general, if you lead an active lifestyle and can walk for several hours at a stretch (with breaks), you should do fine on our trips. If you’re unsure, feel free to ask us about which tour best matches your fitness level. We have options for beginners through to very experienced hikers.
Slovakia has a seasonal climate, but mountain weather can be unpredictable. Conditions can change quickly, and no weather can be guaranteed for any specific month. Please refer to the seasonal overview on our website.
The terrain is alpine and varied, including tree roots, rocks, boulders, and uneven mountain paths. Some areas are grassy or softer, but most hikes involve rugged terrain.
Each day typically starts with breakfast at your accommodation, then you’ll head out for the day’s guided hike with your group. Our walking holidays are fully guided, meaning an experienced local mountain guide will accompany the group on all hikes, managing the route and pace. You can expect to walk for several hours each day, with breaks for snacks, photos, and a longer lunch break (often at a mountain hut or scenic spot). In general we might hike for a few hours in the morning, stop for lunch, then hike another couple of hours in the afternoon. By late afternoon or early evening we return to our base or move to the next accommodation (depending on the itinerary). Evenings are usually free for you to relax – you might have dinner with the group or explore the local town. Our longer itineraries often include a free/rest day or some shorter activity options so you can recover or enjoy cultural sites. You’ll also receive a welcome briefing from your guide at the start, and they’ll provide insights about the area’s nature and culture as you go. Overall, you can expect a friendly small-group atmosphere, knowledgeable guides, and a well-organised adventure so you can just enjoy the hiking without worrying about logistics.
Yes. Slovakia has excellent-quality tap water that is safe to drink, so there is no need to purchase bottled water.
Yes. All our group walking holidays are fully guided by experienced, English-speaking mountain guides.
Absolutely. Solo travelers are absolutely welcome – in fact, about 75% of our guests join as solo travelers, so you will not feel out of place at all. The group environment is friendly and social, and many people come alone and leave with new friends. We typically have small group sizes (often around 6–12 people, maximum ~15) so that everyone gets to know each other and the guide can give personal attention. If you are coming solo, we can arrange a room share with another traveler of the same gender to avoid single supplements, or you can often request a single room.
Inclusions such as accommodation, breakfasts, local transfers, guiding, and mountain rescue coverage are listed in the trip description on our website above.
No. Flights are not included. Each traveller is responsible for booking those themselves.
Poprad-Tatry Airport is the most convenient option and includes complimentary transfers. Other airports such as Kraków or Košice are also possible, giving you the opportunity to explore further.
Our walking holidays are adults-only (18+). Most guests are between 30 and 65 years old, but there is no upper age limit provided you meet the fitness requirements.
